PCIe compatability

A friend of mine has a old 3rd gen core i5 that he is willing to give to me so I can build a proper PC. It has PCIe gen 3. I have found multiple motherboards for it. I want to put a PCIe x1 sata expansion card in it, and the one I found says that it is PCIe Express 3.0. Are these the same? If not, are they compatible? If they are compatible, but not the same, will I lose performance?

I see PCIe 3.0 and PCI Express 3 mentioned, so yes its PCIe gen 3.
