So I had a very crappy wifi connection up till now. think...5mbps capped. and it was always by my computer side so I was easily able to use an Ethernet cable to maintain a connection. However...

Starting this week we changed to a different provider. T-mobile specifically. The problem is, the only viable place for the network router or gateway is in the living room which is I think about 50/100 feet from where my current setup is. Should I get a really long Ethernet cable...Or should I set aside a little bit to buy a Network card for my PC and go wireless to avoid the hassle of cable routing?

You could always go powerline. Or if you have cable in your walls you can go moca. Both can be good options.

Although compared to wireless both are more expensive

If you can run the cable its the best solution but you always have other options.

Wireless is always an option it just can have lag spikes and more volitility. I know people who game over wifi and have little to no issues. Wireless network enviroments vary so it depends on yours.I know people who game over wifi and have little to no issues. Wireless network enviroments vary so it depends on yours.

Ethernet cable is pretty cheap so if you can run the cable go for it.

Its down to you and how much you want to spend.
