Planned build: R5 5600G, 8GB Ram, 120GB boot SSD, and a mix of hard drives laying around.

What functionality I want:

  • Local SMB and regular computer to NAS file backup/transfer.
  • Cloud access to files from tablets/phones/laptops (I've heard of something called NextCloud)
  • Password managers for 4 people (I think this is through docker containers, either Bitwarden or Vaultwarden, idk which one is better)
  • Calendar management between all devices (this is not as important but would be nice)
  • MacOS time machine backup
  • some equivalent icloud backup

NAS Stuff is all new to me. I have build PCs in the past before but idk about what OS/software to use for the NAS to run ll the things above. I've heard of Truenas as an option but id be open to other OS as well.

Some other notes: This is for my whole family who uses a mix of Macs/Windows computers, androids and iphones and we want passwords/data to be able to be accessed from anywhere.

Please let me know what OS to use, how to find resources on this stuff, and also whether the parts are ok(i could alternatively get a i3 12th gen).

thanks!

If the drives are mixed size, and you want to run any sort or redundancy or parity, you are pretty much limited to either unraid or windows/linux with snapraid for the drives.
