I was just getting ready to play some games with friends and booted the old Minecraft up, when it happens! PC shuts off, and I detect a burning smell, sort of like a solder as I recall it. CPU (i5 9600k) has been having heat problems for a while. I built the PC 7 years ago, though the CPU and motherboard had to be replaced in 2019. Everything else, including the Corsair RM750 PSU is original.

When trying to turn it on again after the catastrophe, all USB devices were powered as was the GPU and fans. No output to monitors though. When the PC turned off the light on the Corsair AIO was red, so I doubt the CPU may have burned out. I THINK that’s where the smell was coming from too. No beeps or anything though.

The PC is unplugged now, it can’t cause a fire or anything can it😅 In the event of it having been the PSU though, can it cause a fire or something when powered back on? IDK, I’m a bit paranoid I guess and haven’t been too hardcore into PCs for a few years now. I think I’ll just start with cleaning the dust off and continue from there, probably will have to get a new CPU, that’s my guess. Any advice/thoughts? What do you think is the culprit, am I in danger of burning the house down? =D

That's just what happens when you spin a powered down fan really fast when it's switched off.  It generates electricity

With all the Trolls, Try Hards, Noobs and Weirdos around here you'd think i'd find SOMEWHERE to fit in!

I think it was a can of air. Just look at the extended nozzle. And if it were hair spray, the residue INSIDE the case, would also have caught fire and burn a bit longer. It was most likely a bunch of fine dust, getting the perfect mixture of fuel/air, and the fan creating fancy sparks. (like @SimplyChunkmentioned)

Piece of solid advice: if you're using compressed air to clean fans, make sure they don't spin. They can easily spin WAY faster then they are designed for, and just wreck themself. (or if connected to the other components, push power inside the hardware, damaging it)
