Hello, I have been wanting to build a server for quite some time now.\

What I am looking to use it for is to use it for storage mostly and to also run some game servers every now and then like Minecraft & to also offload and render videos and 3d models (if not possible for the game server or offloading the work I can compromise on those I just want storage)

Parts I have right now that I am able to use

  • 2x Nvidia quadro k4000
  •  4x Seagate ST8000DM004 these will be the drives I am using
  • supermicro H8QgG6-F G34 + 4x Operon 6134 8-core CPU (also Don't know what PSU I should get for it)

Server parts I am looking to use instead of what I got up above (would have to buy)

  • dell poweredge r720 16Bay + 2x Xeon-2690V2

I don't know what OS I should use for it also If I forgot anything please let me know me know or any questions I will answer ASAP.

Start with what you have (a 600W PSU will do nicely here) and figure out if there are any limitations. Upgrade if said limits are inhibiting your workflow.

As for the OS, try TrueNAS Core or Proxmox.

600w for a 4 cpu and 2 gpu server? Seems low.

You're ok with the inefficiency?

Between the H8QG6-F and Quad Opteron 6134 you're looking at about a 12500 PassMark while being 115W chips each.

Heres the Quad 6174's (12C/12T chips) which is ~12600 PassMark.

Compare that to even just a lowly Ryzen 3 3300X which is a single 65w 4C/8T CPU with the same performance...

Thats where the Dell PowerEdge with Xeon-2690V2 can come in with a score of 13468 and I would have 2 of them Higher than both of those options and more cores and threads.

Edit: I have the AMD server as a backup more than anything got it for cheap

Edit 2: I potentially found a better PowerEdge option but if I don't update anything on it the deal was lost.

I am getting a dell PowerEdge R720XD, 2690 V2 x2, 32gb of ram right now but I'm going to upgrade to 64 later on. I will be aiming for 96TB of space in total but don't know what RAID i should use if any at all.

Pretty sure you don't want just a bunch of individually asigned drives. With 96tb, I would go with at least raid6/z2 dual redundancy.

If you go with larger drives like 16tb for example, I'd do one pool with 6 drives. 2 for redundancy.

If you go with 8tb drives or smaller, I'd go with two pools. Each one 6 drives with dual redundancy.

But that's just my thought. I am risk adverse, so I like multiple drive redundancy.
