I know its really hard to say but do you think my components would 'badly' bottleneck a gtx 790 using pcie 2.0 x16? For example would a 7990 be extremely bottlenecked or would it be about ok?

7990 is supposedly the competitor to titan so take that for what it is. and realistically no gpu fully uses the pcie 3 bandwidth. at least that's what ive heard.

So will my i7 2600k be alright with these cards?

Your 2600k will be fine!

There is ALWAYS a bottleneck, and for gaming it is RARELY the CPU. Your 2600k @ 4.5ghz would game just as well as my 3930k @ 4.5ghz. Would you get a FPS bump by switching it to ivy/haswell? Of course, but it won't be much.

Keep your 2600k, it's a beast of a CPU and there's no compelling reason to upgrade in my opinion. Unless you just want to. :D

*For reference, how many threads have you seen that are along the lines of "Switched from an i7 920 to Ivy, 300% more FPS!!!"? ;)

If someone is still roaming on a 920, they might upgrade for power consumption reasons as well.

Absolutely, other reasons do exist. I'd suggest that particular argument is likely to be a false economy, it would need careful calculation of power draw vs electricity pricing to ensure it's actually saving you anything once you buy the $300 CPU.

Less power consumption may lead to less heat output.

Nice one, so with that in mind i feel confident to upgrade, picking which card though is a nightmare 790 prob have to wait until september, 7990 lots of driver issues, 690 only 2 gbs available memory, 780 sli a possibility, 7970 crossfire im worried about driver issues and frame latency.

I'm not sure(and I don't think anyone else is) when AMD will release their driver fix to the public, so it's hard to say.

If amd actually had better software i would make the jump but for £1000 i expect much more, tbh 7990 should have the best drivers for the price you pay

I would NOT buy a 7990, more because it's over 2x the price of a 7970 than worries about drivers.

Nobody can tell you what's coming, you'll have to wait and see like the rest of us. ;)

*If it were me, I'd be waiting for 780. Well, I AM waiting for 780. :D

I'll be building another rig at some point for folding purposes. I'll be using my current cards in the folding rig, and upgrading my gaming rig. So we shall see what AMD and NVIDIA bring to the table for us consumers to gobble up. Or perhaps reject.
