F@H Work units...

Go to solution Solved by tobben,

different work units for different purposes, a work unit is exactly what it says, it's basically the project you are currently working on, some are for gpus, some are for cpu's, some are big some are small, some give high points return and some give low point return, take me for example, i am in 4th place on the team but i only have 285 wu's, that is because i have been doing big advanced work units, bigger work units for multi cpu systems, as the name implies they are larger than normal work units, then you have the web plugin with tiny tiny work units and low point return, but the wu's are small so you do alot of them, so work units differ in size and points awarded depending on what they are aimed at.

Edit: i expect whaler to show up at some point to add more proper detail :P.

Firstly, sorry if there has been a previous post on this, I searched and it came up with nothing, but the search function doesn't seem to search for titles.

So to the question (sorry if its noobish, im quite new). What do work units represent? I recently checked my stats, and I only have about 600k points and 40 odd WU's, yet there's people below me, who have anywhere from 1600 to 200 work units, yet are have less points. It's also apparant further up. There is a user with 147 WU's at 18th place in the LTT group, yet some people below them have 1400-1500. I checked F@H's page and I couldn't find anything on it. So can someone explain why this is?

Different sized WU's with different credit values. With bigger ones, they are harder to do and take longer but have a higher return of points where as small ones are quicker but have low points.

also it's worth adding that for cpu wu's as opposed to gpu wu's that are static, cpu work units award bonus points depending on how fast you return them, so if you do it in 3 hours instead of 5 that means more points for that one wu.

I've noticed that, I have almost 1.89 million with 373 WU's completed and yet Goodwin who is one above me has 1.9 million with only 40 WU's completed.

Here I am! :D

A WU represents a component of the project. Basically a project is cut up into various WU's and assigned to the appropriate class, CPU or GPU, and then are distributed. As you complete WU's, send them up, the system takes all that data and re-compiles a finished project based on all the completed WU's. So, something that would take a "long" time to complete as a single object is done very quickly by splitting it into hundreds/thousands, whatever, number if pieces and having them all worked on almost all at the same time. Hence, distributed computing.
