Help: Upgraded my cpu cooler, now my PC won't boot anymore

Go to solution Solved by Djeunut,

So I just found out what the problem was.

I was cable managing before trying any fixes so I'd have more space on my desk.

This reminded me that I had this problem before but it didn't have anything to do with the cpu or mobo.

It's because of one of the 3 hdds in my system.

Last time I had this problem I tried plugging them in one by one but they all worked so I have no clue which one it is.

The good news is that my cpu and my motherboard are fine.

If any new problems regarding the cpu or motherboard would appear I'll post in this thread again.

Thanks for your help.

So I got a new Corasir aio for my birthday.

I was installing it yesterday but when I was trying to get my air cooler out I took out the cpu too.

So the thermal paste had completely dried out which led to my cpu coming straight out of the socket with my cooler.

I had 3 bent pins on the edge of the cpu which I tried straightening very carefully with a sharp knife.

After a couple of minutes I managed to fix the pins and got the cpu to fit in to the socket again.

When I tried turning my pc on my motherboard rgb turned on, but when I pressed the power button it didn't do a single thing not even by shorting the pins.

I have no clue if my pc isn't turning on because of my cpu or because of the motherboard because this sounds like an issue that could appear when either of the 2 is damaged.

I was wondering if anyone knows a way to further diagnose the issue.

Thanks in advance

Remove CPU and see if board powers on, and which 3 pins did you bent, do you have a pic or use diagram to point to bent pins. What AMD CPU do you have?

does the motherboard have diagnostic LEDs?

yes but it just doesn't turn on so the diagnostics won't show anything

I have a Ryzen 7 3700X.

It were the 3 pins in the top right corner on the picture below.

I'll try booting without the cpu tomorrow because I'm not home today. (I'm in UTC+01:00)

oh, you've broken your cpu then as if anything else was broken it would at least show on the LEDs

Going from left to right counting downwards, we'll called them rows. The 3 pins on the top right corner, so it's the very last pins on the right in rows 1, 2, and 3?

But it doesn't boot at all.

Normally it shows a broken cpu on the LEDs too doesn't it?

Take the CPU out and recheck all the Pins. Might be bad contact, broken pins or some bent pins that you've skipped.

Yes, I can't really find a pinout online so I have no clue what they are for.

Have to zoom in to see it clearly, but it doesn't say what orientation we're looking at. Assuming the gold tile in column A, row 1 is the gold triangle on the CPU, the 3 bent pins on your CPU

  • column A, row 37: MB_DQS_L(3)
  • column B, row 38: MB_DATA(30)
  • column C, row 39: MB_DATA(26)

So it's probably dead if these pins are actually broken

When you get the chance, remove your CPU and double check the bent pins, see if you can straighten them out a bit more and try again. Still don't work, then your CPU might be dead. But still see if m/b will power on without CPU.

Is there a safer or more efficient way to properly straighten them instead of using a knife?

There really isn't a efficient or safer way to straighten them out, just have to be extremely careful not to break them off from the constant bending.
