Just got a synology NAS (ds418) with pently of storage I know this NAS dose not have the ability to do any decodeing for a meda server but I was planing on using an old desktop as a means to run jellyfin for the decodeing itself and have all the media on the NAS. Is this an thing that can be easily done? Any tips or anything?

Yup that can easily be done. Install jellyfin on the desktop and it will do all the media server duties.

You also can just have the client mount the media with a cifs/smb share and the nas won't have to do any decoding at all
