So I plan to build a computer sometime at the end of june, and have been doing a bunch of research and part-picking the past few weeks. Now I hear there is going to be a new chipset? I mean, i've searched google and youtube and there isn't that much about the subject. Is it already released?I've seen z97 motherboards, but no place to buy them. Will they use the same cpu socket or will there be a cpu refresh? When are they supposed to be released? Really, all i want to know is if I will be able to use the new chipset in my build by the beginning of july.

NCIX and Newegg have some of  the Z97 boards in stock. The Haswell refresh CPU's have not came to the market yet.

the z87 and z97 chipsets are almost identical.

z97 will feature sata express on some boards but that is controlled by a 3rd party controller

who knows when sata express will take off.

z97 and z87 have the same socket.

I would bet money z87 will support broadwell if z97 will. kinda like how p67 supports IVYBridge

z97 apparently is in stock at some retailers right now.

k series haswell refresh chips will be available later this year

@ PreoKon summed the rest of it up for you :) Liek he said, "k series haswell refresh chips will be available later this year"

yes it will be the successor to haswell based off of 14nm manufacturing process.

Broadwell  will be 5th generation core series chips

Haswell refresh is still considered 4th generation core series

z87 is just fine.

Can someone explain the key differences between z97 and broadwell compared to z87 and haswell? Like, why would one want z97 over z87?

Z97 will be able to upgrade to Broadwell when it comes to the market. Z87 will not.

quoted from tech power-up. i think this sums it up

A successor to Haswell, Broadwell is its optical shrink to Intel's new 14-nanometer silicon fab process, with minor improvements to IPC, new power-management features, and likely added instruction sets, much like what "Ivy Bridge" was to "Sandy Bridge." It will take advantage of the new process to step up CPU and iGPU clock speeds.

i think z87 may be compatible with broadwell if z97 is. just a theory i have.

You might be right, but I thought the reasoning for Z97 was because Z87 could not handle 14nm chips and  Broadwell will have lower power consumption that the Z87 boards cant handle?

You very well could be right , since at this point all we can do is speculate.

kinda like how old psu would not support haswell low power modes but my 10 year old psu supports c6\c7 states just fine :)

turn all the power saving features off anyway :P

i think it will be like z68 and z77. some of the better z68 boards will got ivy support through a bios update, most didn't.

ya it may be up to the motherboard vendor to decide if a firmware update will be released.

my p67-pro ran ivy just fine with an bios update. p67 was around for quite sometime before z68

I know right, I wish they would get read of the power saving options. If I wanted to save money on my electric bill, I would not have became an overclocker :P and I would then also stay away from the Z series of motherboards if that was the case lol

exactly, these power saving features are for the weak and poor people. i don't mind power saving that means it runs cooler so i can overclock more on air, but that hasn't been the case with the last 2 gens of power saving.

I would really just go with z87 since there isn't going to be any performance increase, however, new motherboards may have additional features compared to their predecessor (Im referring to the maximus vii hero :P )

anyone else getting sick of these 8 month to 1 year refreshes ?

Id rather see a 30-50+% increase in performance on a 2 year refresh heck i might even be able to talk myself into buying one if they did that.

these 5-10% increases are tiring.

I believe from what ive read the sata express on the asus biards is the legit one certified to work. I havnt seen this mentioned about other boards.

Z87 has the chance of being forwards compatible but you wont know until there is official word from intel on that.

Pentium 20th anniversary *drool* but *cries* when he thinks about the fact that the board good enought to pull the best out of it will likely be more than the cpu.
