Enthusiasts seem to point everyone to Audiophile type headphones with a DAC/AMP combo or single unit. Sennheiser 558 and up are headphones to go with. If anyone has a better recommendation please chime in.

both arent great picks one is great for gaming but overall not the best tuning and is hard to drive. and the other is a gaming headphone full of useless gimmicks. there are way better picks and for the same price of a 990 you can get a beyerdynamic tygr which is a easier to drive better tuned version of this headphone.

Anyone that has seen more than 2 recommendation posts I have commented in is going to know what I'm going to say.

Rode NTH-100 (amazon)

Rode NTH-100 (adorama because who supports amazon when they don't have to =)

They almost have a consumer feel but more refined, full and crisp sound and they'll do that running off a potato.  No need for a dac and amp, and while they will still respond to them, they'll be fully enjoyable without them.  They're extremely comfortable, very well built and have a great warranty from a reputable company.  Honestly if I had to go back to onboard audio these are the headphones, I'd take with me.  If I had a budget of $200usd it would be these and a mod mic and call it a day. (here's to hoping Rode comes out with an accompanying boom mic)

hd600/650/6xx are to transparent and really really want a dac/amp combo

dt880 is to hard to drive to get the full potential out of

I can add AKG K361 as an excellent headphone but it needs good pads to shine in sound and comfort and the build quality could be a touch better.
