How do I VR?

If you can get a quest 2 for a good price relative to other options it would probably be your best bet.

To clarify, HTC calls it's sensors "base stations". You would need to mount them somewhere (or even place them on furniture for example) in order to use a Vive. While Oculus doesn't use the same terminologies the issue is more or less the same, although to a smaller extent.

Budget (including currency): none

Country: india

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: among us vr

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):

Already have game and stronk pc, don’t know how to vr

Imagine everything i have written in a Linus Voice/ linus tone (Spock live long and prosper gif here ,idk why tho, i guess i just want to say that i like star trek and am waiting for new seasons of the ongoing shows), But seriously, a lot of what i type only makes sense when said in a Linus tone from an older ltt video (circa 2017-2019 & now 2024-onwards) basically before he got a beard and a lot of it should make sense even in a Linus with a beard face.

also note as per the latest typing test on my laptop, my accuracy is 69%

I'm not weird/creepy, I'm just observant I have ADHD and am not on any meds for it because I don't want to and don't need to be on meds. i also may just be depressed. If you find other things around you depressing, are you depressed or are you surrounded by depressing things?

What budget do you have for a VR headset? I'm admittedly not very familiar with India's market situation for VR devices, but that's the first step. Is it really nothing?

If you already have a decent PC to drive things and are trying to save a buck, you might be able to get your hands on a used Oculus CV1 or HTC VIVE kit (just get your hands on a full kit, including controllers and base stations).

In the US and Western Europe these older headsets have plummeted in value despite being only about 5 years old.

Say I want to play among us vr and have a pc, I probably want nothing more than controllers and goggles, anything else you would recommend I would buy?

That's pretty much the cheapest you can go unless you want to try your luck on a WMR headset, but your mileage may vary for those.

What is WMR?

edit just figured what wmr is and I do not want that

still any recommendations on actually what I should get to play among us vr? I don’t really need full body tracking just controllers right?

You need an HMD and controllers for sure.

Ignoring full-body tracking for a minute, you still need a way to track controller and headset movement. Older headsets use base-stations mounted around you, either on your desk or in your space. Even the original Oculus Rift uses small sensors to track controller movement. You can not use a Vive or Oculus Rift without compatible sensors.

Newer headsets like the Quest/Quest 2 use built-in cameras to track your controller, which does make proper full-body tracking impossible. It is however more easy to set up.

The issue you're facing is that the only VR headsets you might be able to get for relatively cheap are older "gen 1" VR devices like the Rift, HTC Vive or even perhaps the Rift S. You are unlikely to get your hand on a Vive Cosmos or Oculus Quest for quite so cheap, or any other headset with built-in tracking for that matter.

Out of all the reasonably likely options out there, all require 3 things: a headset, controllers and an adequate set of outboard sensors/base stations, complete with cabling. You cannot run a Vive without SteamVR-compatible 1.0 base stations. You cannot run a Rift without the Rift Sensor.

Again, your best bet is to look for an original Oculus Rift CV1 or HTC Vive kit (which includes all the hardware you'll need). This is typically far cheaper than buying all the required components seperately.

I actually just don’t have room for sensors to be mounted anywhere, I’ll look into it though, is there any option without sensors( I’m ok with the base station)

also I cannot find a non used oculus rift or hoc vive

You seem to know smthg about VR and that's alrdy better than me haha. Would u know if half life alyx would perform good on a Rx 6600. If yes so which of the used headsets would u recommend more?

I always wanted to play that game

I always wanted to play that game

For reference, I ran Half Life Alyx on an OG Vive on high settings using an RTX 2080.

How well the game runs on your PC will tend to vary quite a bit depending on headset resolution. The display on something like a Vive only contains slightly more pixels than a 1080p display, so 90Hz shouldn't be too much of a problem. By contrast, something like a Vive Pro (my current headset) or the Valve Index is somewhere between 1440p and 4k from a pixel-count perspective. Some displays even go higher than that, like the Vive Pro 2.

The game ran perfectly fine on the Vive with my current PC at high settings. And while I didn't spend much time with it, it also seems to handle the Vive pro just fine too without tweaking anything. Presumably even higher resolutions are feasible at medium or low settings without dipping below a comfortable framerate.

An RX6600 has similar-ish performance to a 2080, so our experiences shouldn't be too dissimilar, especially if you've overclocked your card (mine is stock). The bottom line is that your PC should be able to run the game very well.

As for what headset you should buy: I'd say that depends on what you're willing to spend and what deals you can get. If you have the budget for a new headset, something like a Quest 2 + link cable is probably one of the best options out there at around 400$. Otherwise I'd start browsing your local classified: you can now find original Vive, Oculus (CV1) and Rift S kits for relatively cheap online if you get lucky (my own kit cost me 160 dollars), so I'd suggest whatever you can get your hands on. You do want to be careful to buy a full kit and not try to buy out parts yourself if you're unsure about what you're doing, but in any case this is often cheaper anyway.

I would however warn against the Rift S due to the fact that they often come without tethers (as they were apparently easy to damage), and replacement tethers can cost as much as the headset. Additionally, if the Rift CV1 interests you, you'll probably want three sensors instead of the more typical 2 for fully-supported 360° tracking (although some people have reported success with only 2, so your mileage may vary). The Rift may not be the best in all departments (it does not have included headphones and there's a non-negligible screen-door effect), but it's still an excellent headset, and its relative commercial success means you'll find an array of  parts for it (and tips). Imo, that's the headset I'd get in your situation.
