I'm not sure the monitor I'm getting as it's a Christmas present.

I'm am sure it seems crazy upgrading INTO AM4 right now, but I don't want to pay for or bother with all the new AM5, DDR5 early adopter stuff. AM4 has been great in my son's build and I wanted to go that direction.

I guess flame me for buying am4 and last gen gpu at the end of 2022

I'd probably choose an equivalent AMD gpu instead to save some money (6700 xt is a little worse and $150 cheaper, 6750xt is on par and $100 cheaper).

So, I was really looking hard between the 6700 XT and 3070, but decided that for $400 I could go Green again this time and not leave DLSS and RayTracing (I know I know, can't do too much RT on the 3070, but I want to play around with it, show my kid minecraft RT etc.) off the table. I could have gotten a 6700 xt for probably $300 used, but the 3070 is slightly faster, and I've never owned an RTX card before. Most likely, when I do upgrade again I'll go team red, maybe a 7700 XT or something in a few years.

I did not know that. I'll maybe swap with the one in my NAS then...

Good catch from Jaslion. Several websites have a tiered list that helps determine the quality of the PSU.

https://www.gamingscan.com/psu-hierarchy/

Its funny though. I use to have a rocketfish PSU that was considered to be the lowest tier garbage unit you could buy and guaranteed to burn down your house. I used it for 7 years without any problems.

Can anyone recommend a good PSU? Also, what wattage should I go with for this build? I've heard 3000 series GPUs can spike.

Most recommendations will include fanboism. But really, anything from the top 2 or 3 tiers is what you looking to buy. 750w should be enough but maybe go with a 1000w for the "just in case future upgrades" factor.

I'm a Seasonic fanboy. Everything I've ever built as a Seasonic PSU except my newest build which I bought a EVGA instead.

Good choice cuz tldr: Nvidia's better for Blender than Amd.

I have no idea if Unity prefers one brand over another tho.

Details:

On https://opendata.blender.org/, the 3070 has a much better score than 6700 xt (higher is better).

You'll also notice the top gpus are all Nvidia.

This website also says

"NVIDIA cards have a significant performance lead over AMD when it comes to rendering due to the OptiX and CUDA APIs."

If I ever need a new gpu, it'll probably be Nvidia because a cartoony npr renderer called Beer Malt, that I might wanna use one day, may have glitches with some Amd gpus iirc. Guess I'll miss out on savings from going Amd 😛

Luck exists. Doesnt take away from the fact that these are bad.

A 750w or higher corsair rm(x), enermax revolution d.f., fractal ion or msi mpg will more than do

So, I've added one component based on what everyone here suggested. I just ordered a BitFenix  Formula 750W Gold PSU.
After doing a little research, this thing is on the A tier or S tier (depending on the tier list) and has decent headroom for my demands. Also, the price to performance on this thing is incredible! Why aren't more tech youtubers etc. talking about this PSU? $85 after tax on Newegg for top tier. So many worse PSUs are a lot more. Is the PSU market a lot of hype and marketing?
