GPU noise (3070)

Go to solution Solved by matt0725,

I think that sounds like coil whine yeah. it changes with load/fps and doesn't happen at idle which is all telltale coil whine. Unfortunately there's nothing you can do to eliminate it other than maybe try to avoid the FPS range where it is the worst. Usually its worse at higher FPS range. My card is a 2080 super and it has it at anything above 60 fps 🥲

Hi,

System:

- I5-9400f with cryorig air cooler

- Gigabyte 3070 Vision OC

- Gigabyte z390m motherboard

- 2 teamgroup ssd

- Corsair 650W PSU

I got this GPU a few month ago, gave my 1660 to a friend, recently i hear this low buzzing noise from the 3070 while gaming.

After lowering graphics setting the noise lowers or even stops. Its not a fan noise.

Is it a normal noise, not a big problem or there is sg with this GPU?

Can it be that the PSU is not strong enough?

Thank you,

Boren

im not going to download/open that video on my pc just for safety, but i assume what you have is coil whine. all gpu's have it, but it can vary wildly between cards. If you upload that video somewhere and post a link id take a look/listen to make sure

Unfortunately there's nothing you can do to eliminate it other (snip)

well, actually you can... typically change out the psu, sometimes it's enough to just change out the pcie cables! (careful with compatibility though,  the wrong cables could, and probably will, damage the gpu...)

and nope there's no guide or anything,  its pure luck or intuition if you will.

thing is different cables will have different resistances and that can shift the frequencies of the coils... either make it inaudible or shift it to higher fps, etc...

i have the same gpu as op, btw, also corsair psu... the coilwhine is something else! lol

but luckily it only really gets bad around 150fps... 800fps is incredible haha... well i usually lock my fps anyway since i hate fluctuations in framerate... (either 60 or 120 typically)

ps: you could *also* put some specific glue on the the gpu coils so they don't vibrate at all anymore!  no more coilwhine just like that! of course that can be tricky, requires some expertise and is surely not covered by any warranty... (but it *does* work)

The direction tells you... the direction
