Hey everyone I've been thinking about upgrading my home network and would like to start with a dream machine pro, I see it has the option for a harddrive but was wondering how does it work?

It's not poe so do i simply buy ubiquity cameras and connect them with ethernet to the dmp and it'll record on it?

With either the UDMP or the UDMSE, you install a drive and purchase Unifi cameras, and yes it'll record to the hard drive. The UDMSE has POE output to power the cameras (and your AP(s)), as well as a small builtin SSD that can be useful if you just have a few cameras and set them to record on motion only instead of continuously. With the UDMP, you would need either POE Injectors or a seperate POE switch to power the cameras.

The se has poe so I'm assuming with the pro model it's the same thing but I have to give the cameras electricity?

There are two types of Unifi cameras. Ethernet cameras that require POE, and wireless cameras that require power from a wall outlet (technically they are USB powered). I don’t think any of the ethernet cameras have a DC-In option.

It's hard for me to justify the udmse and add poe cameras on top of that  that's a pretty big expense.

I'm house is filled with wyze so I'll just stick with that.

Wise decision... Pun intended!

For some reason I can't reply without this text in my box.... so to use the HD drive on the dump I would have to get a poe injector and connect a camera to it? Will wifi cameras record on the udmp

Unifi Protect officially only supports Unifi cameras, and they do have wireless offerings. Originally the UVC-G3-Mini was priced competitively with Wyze (ignoring the server/storage) but they recently increased its price a lot.

There is at least one community project you can run that lets any RTSP camera work in Protect, and they work, but Wyze cameras don’t handle RTSP well (you have to flash a different firmware, and the video streams have issues).

Any currently supported ubiquiti camera will record on the udm pro, the udm pro SE or the NVR. Wifi cameras plug in to wall power. Wired cameras need a Poe injector or switch. The udm pro SE has a Poe switch built in.

Thank you, so I can just buy a bunch of wireless ubiquity cameras and use the recording feature of the udmp. That make me happy.

The UDM-Pro has no PoE ports, so you'll either have to source a PoE switch or use separate PoE injectors to power the cameras.

The UDM-Pro-SE has support for PoE on all 8 ports, 6 for standard PoE and 2 for PoE+. As long as the cameras also support these PoE standards, you can plug them directly in. However, if you plan to have more cameras than ports available, you'll need a switch.

If he’s using wireless cameras, though, he does not need the SE.

Ya I plan on just using wireless cameras with the udmp not the se, just to lower cost a little bit.

You’ll install a hard drive into the UDMP and that’ll allow you to use the Protect app on it to record/view footage. You can use any UniFi protect camera including wifi ones like the G3 Instant or the Doorbell and it’ll record that. If you want to use any wired AP or camera, you’ll need POE injectors for each of those if you don’t get a POE switch to go along with the UDMP.

I highly recommend getting the udmpSE over the normal pro. The Poe allows you to power cameras and access points. It also has faster wan ports 2.5gb rj45 and 10gb sfp+. It's pretty silly to not use ubiquiti access points as they are controlled by the dream machine pro console. In my opinion the dream machine pro is pretty useless without Poe as the whole reason to get the dream machine is to control you access points and record from your cameras.
