Hi,

I have a rather odd question, when I was surfing on the web, I saw a lot of people saying that I need to connect to cables for a GPU if he have multiple connector (Ex: 2 x 8 pins).

I have a Asus ROG Strix 1080 Ti and I saw that the person who build my computer used only one cable for the GPU ( So: 8 pins to 6+2 pins with a pigtail with 6+2 pins). My question is: was it a good move of the guy or should I put another cable just to be safe ?

NB: I have this PC for about 4 years with the only cable connected and I didn't have major issues until recently, where if I was powering up the PC after beeing in sleep mode, noting will show up on my screen and I had to do multiple restart of the computer just to see something.

Thanks in advance! ( because i'm french-canadian, I might have make some mistake in my sentence)

Been using that cable setup for 4 years now, no issue.  Only super high draw cards have an issue with daisy chains like that.  You're good.

It's perfectly safe to use the pig tail cables with a card like a 1080 Ti. It doesn't become sketchy until you get to cards like the 3080 (GPUs that can pull 350W).

That said, if you have the option to use 2 discrete cables, it's a good idea to do so. Nvidia has a lot of power management circuitry on the cards which can limit performance ever so slightly with a single cable (Nvidia doesn't do a power limit necessarily, they do a current limit per connector, and since voltage is slightly lower with the pigtails, it has an ever so slightly lower power limit). It's unlikely to be noticeable, but it has been measured.

Okay thank you !

I did put an other cable onto the GPU and I don't know if it's because I restarted the computer or I changed the config but I see a slight change in my performance (Slitghty more FPS). Anyway, I'm planning to change my PC in the near future.

Didnt have any issues But one of my recent evga cards wouldnt post with using a single cable. Which is weird as its still used the reference board.
