Best wireless adapter for range

I recently got some old dells and decided to try making my own router and I am looking for the best pci or pci express wireless adapter for range. The router will be in the basement of my house and needs to reach the second floor.

 

Does anyone have any suggestion for which adapter to use. I would like dual band and preferably stay under $40.

Everyone I know (including Linus, you may have heard of him) seems to go for Intel.
