I have a hp compaq 8300. and was wondering if running with 4 sticks of 2gb ram is better than 1 stick of 8gb of ram.

I'd recommend 2x4gb. At 4x2gb you are giving up performance, and at 1x8gb you are giving up even more performance. If you can do 2x8gb I would do that.

Yes

1 stick of 8gb is single channel which cripples cpu performance

4 sticks of 2gb is dual channel so ideal config

Both are dual rank configs assuming the 2gb sticks are single sided since basically all 8gb ddr3 is dual sided

While it is running dual channel, it is not ideal dual channel, so there IS more bandwidth, but also more latency

ideally itd be 2 4gb dual sided sticks so you get the ideal dual channel and dual rank config

but still though dual channel will be far better than shitty single channel
