Weird behaviour after computer suddenly turned off

Hey hi!

So, I basically just bought Stray and was going to test how well it ran before going to bed; but then during the loading screen my computer suddenly turned off, there was no weird sound or anything.

After turning it on again, I noticed that both the CPU fan and one of the case fans weren't spinning, so I shut it down to check if everything was being properly detected in the bios. Once I pressed the power button, it turned on for a brief second and turned off again. This happened two times, in the third time it worked, all fans were spinning and I was able to get into the bios, but it wouldn't boot into Windows afterwards (it got stuck in a black screen).

I turned it off through the PSU switch and on again, and then finally everything seemed to work fine and I got back into Windows.

Any ideas on what could be happening? My PSU is a little old (around 8 years at this point), could it be dying? Or could it be that my MOBO is bad?

Thanks in advance!

Your PSU could be dying (it's getting up there in age); and/or your motherboard could be dying. Reset the motherboard CMOS and see if that fixes the problem. If you are techy, you can test your PSU using a multimeter.

You could also do a prime95 CPU stress test and a gpu stress test, to draw power and see if your computer shuts down or not. Though not definitive, you also could try and test your PSU using OCCT

Report back any results you get from these tests

Chris Titus' Windows 10/11 tweak tool is the best thing since the GUI was invented https://christitus.com/windows-tool/

Thanks for the reply!

I don't think I even have a multimeter at home haha. The electrical aspect of tech is one I severely lack in terms of knowledge, but I'll do some research.

I did a CMOS reset and did both a Blender Classroom render (CPU + GPU) and an OCCT power stress test, as you mentioned. Nothing out of the ordinary happened, temperature was fine and the computer hasn't shut down.

Should I invest in a new PSU soon, or is it okay to wait a little more?

Thanks again! :).

Doing a CMOS reset may have been enough to fix your problem. I would wait and see if the problem happens again. Good on the stress tests, thats at least a positive sign.

PSU is getting old; assuming it is functional its okay to wait a little bit, but all considered, I would look into getting a new PSU. Here is a PSU tier list:
