Supermicro BIOS updates without/wrong CPU?

I'm looking at a Supermicro X9DRE-TF+ which would require at least BIOS version 3.0 to support v2 CPUs.

 

Would I be able to update the BIOS with v2 CPU(s) in it, or can I update it without CPU(s) installed, or would I have to get an older CPU just to update the BIOS?

You can probably do a BIOS update through IPMI, that shouldn't require a viable CPU to work, but I've yet to figure out how to do it successfully on the couple of Supermicro boards I've used, so your mileage may vary.

That means I'd have to try it out and see what happens.  It might as well already have the newer version of the BIOS installed ...
