Also i havent touched the pc yet, it's still running and has been for about an hour now

Honestly I would personally shut it off at this point and see what happens. MSI has in my experience been pretty helpful with this stuff if something did go wrong.

- I never clear CMOS for BIOS updates. Wouldn't hurt I guess, but this shouldn't have messed you up.

- I'm typing this from a machine with a MSI Z690 Edge Wifi DDR4 board in it, that I've updated every BIOS iteration released, using just a regular USB port on the front, not the USB flash port. Not an issue. So the "wrong port" shouldn't have messed you up.

This board has debug LEDs, any of them on?

The last MSI board I had a flash go wrong on, it hung like that (thanks to a mechanical keyboard incompatibility) powered down as recommended by an MSI tech actually, and it came back up luckily, and was able to reflash (with a different keyboard plugged in), no issues.

I couldnt find a post talking about exactly what to do in this situation:

Mobo: msi pro z690 a ddr4

Cpu: 12700k

My brothers CPU was overheating badly (i got so far as to try lapping the IHS) so the next step i tried was updating the bios .

Here's exactly what i did:

-DL the bios update to fat32 8gb drive

-Didnt clear CMOS (stupid, i know, its my first time) but it was cleared recently (only had XmP enabled)

-Had thumb drive inserted on top of pc case (not in bios flash port) probably a mistake?

-followed guide saying to enter bios and click bios flash

-found the drive and file, clicked update and sat back.

-it updated and never booted again. The pc is on but theres no signal.

The mobo has a flash button on the back and a flash drive port.

Should i shut-off, clear CMOS, instert drive into mobo and hit the flash button?

Thanks, Zach

Depends, which method of flashing you use.
There is 1 special usb port for bios flashing using flash button at rear I/O, no other port will work.

NVM, you used the standard bios method.

I didn't clear CMOS before updating my MSI board.

And it shouldn't take an hour, so yeah, that update session went bonker

Well, regardless, you'll need to restart/power down PC first before you can attempt something.
IMHO, if a PC restart (like @OhioYJ said) doesn't work, you can try reflashing using the bios flash button.

It's trying to boot off the flash drive. Remove it.

If you found the bios on the flash drive and the board went with it, that means it's the right Bios and it probably did flash.

Try pluging in the monitor into the onboard video out and see if there's image.

Thanks so much for all the help y'all.

I took the usb out after hard shutting off.

It rebooted a few times after pressing the power button and is now seemingly back to normal.

Checked the bios version and it seems to have updated successfully!

Wonderful advise! Thanks!
