Considering upgrading my GPU (difficulty inside)

Cool, thanks!

If you don't want Ray Tracing or DLSS there could be a good argument made for saving $100 with a 1660 super by the way.

It's an odd ball because it uses a "1xxx" series naming scheme but is a Turing GPU. If you need 8gb VRAM it would be out of the question better to get the 3050, but if you don't, and want to save $100 for a slight dip in performance in games...

Current Specs:

2x 1920x1200 Dell U2415 60Hz Monitors

2x Xeon E5-2643 v2 CPUs (6c/12t 3.5Ghz)

512GB EDD Registered DDR3 RAM

AMD Radeon Pro WX 7100 (8GB video RAM, powered by single 8pin cable)

1300 watt PSU (Dell Precision T7610 workstation)

Not much of a gamer, but the few games I do play (minecraft with sildur's shaders, Armoured Warfare, World of Tanks), something struggle a bit with things. I have branched out with some demos and found the GFX settings wanting...

So, considering a GPU upgrade. I can pick up new a RTX 3050 for 250$US.

(A) A good price?

(B) Balanced for my setup?

(C) IIRC My PSU board can support 2x6pin or 1x8pin, but to be honest, I don't fully remember right.

(D) would you suggest a different video card? The WX 7100 is roughly equivalent of an GTX 1060 3GB

(E) Not pleased with AMD's unstable drivers, so I'd prefer to go back to nVidia if I"m to change cards.

I really have no intentions of upgrading my entire system just for some video games, so no point in suggesting a newer rig. This one serves me just fine for my photography.

Yeah i mean used. If you're only buying new then not worth it with 3060@$350 over 3050.

My main concern with buying used is I get one that's been run to within an inch of its life (and improperly cooled or volted) by some crypto-bro trying to recover some of his investments.

The 3050 price tag is new, @250$US and I was wondering simply if it was overkill for my rig, or not.

It might be a bit overkill, but with you wanting to go new and not AMD, you don't have much of a choice in that budget. Worst case scenario you get to turn up graphics settings more than you had planned on. The WX7100 seems to be comparable to the 1060 in games so a 3050 would be a fairly large upgrade for games.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

Yes, thanks to you and the videos, the 1660 super is the way I went, and I got it new for under 200$, so a plus all around.

Cheers!
