Sorry, I should have mentioned this earlier - when I mentioned fps, in my first post, they were about games that I used to play but don’t have any more (star-wars battlefront 2, fortnite). I can measure the fps I get in these games (bf2042, warzone 2) if that helps.

Sorry for the confusion

Yeah your system is performing as expected, The games you play now are much more demanding than the ones you used to play.

The 3200g is a 4/4 which is on the very low side of performance for gaming these days as demands are higher and higher. The recommended by most is a 6/12 such as the 5600 for a budget gaming CPU.

The only way to improve your performance is to upgrade your CPU / GPU.

Hi there,

I have had an issue for the last year or so, where my PC’s performance in games took a hit around the time I got a new keyboard, mouse and headset (although I don’t know if the new peripherals are linked to the issue). I noticed significant drops in frame rate in games (from 80-120 fps to 30-60 fps) accompanied by a lower gpu temperature while in game (it used to peak at around 75-76 degrees C, now it only seems to peak at around 67)

Despite my efforts to try and combat the issue, I haven’t made any progress, and have no Idea what the problem could be.

Pc Specs are as follows:

Mobo: Asrock b450 pro4-f

cpu: ryzen 3 3200g (not using igpu)

gpu: gtx 1660 super

ram: 2x8GB corsair (vengence I think) ddr4

psu: corsair 450 watt 80 plus bronze

ssd: crucial mx500 500GB

cooler: amd stock

OS: windows 10 home

Any help is really appreciated as I have had this issue for a long time, and don’t know what to do

Thank you

What's your CPU usage  & temperature while gaming ? A low GPU utilization could be a CPU bottle neck somewhere when gaming.

Also what's your GPU usage while gaming ?

Do you enable v-sync ? That will also limit the fps to 60 if you play on a 60hz monitor.

If I remember correctly, CPU usage was around 90% and GPU was probably around 60%, although I seem to recall that it was like this before the problem started. I also checked CPU temps while in game, and they seemed ok

Going to need data i'm afraid. Please check rather than going on memory else we might miss something.

90% CPU usage points to a CPU bottleneck though which would explain your GPU temps and usage being lower.

Would running a benchmark provide useful statistics? If so, are there any in particular you would recommend? (edit: preferably free ones 🙂 )

No need, just need to play the games you are normally playing and check the temperatures. You can use HwInfo to get the temperatures of your CPU / GPU.

Also check your GPU / CPU usage in task manager while the game is active and running - disable v-sync too if it's enabled in the game options.

Also what game are you getting 30-60 fps in, what quality do you play at and what resolution ?

Ok Thank you 🙂

I’ll be back in a bit with some stats for a couple of different games

I had Hwinfo 64 and task manager open on my 2nd monitor to watch and note gpu and cpu temp in game. I also had vsync and gsync disabled, all at 1080p. Heres what I got:

Battlefield 2042 (low settings)

Rush game mode (32 players):

cpu temp: 61-62 degrees C

cpu usage: 100%
gpu temp: 66-67 degrees

gpu usage 1-5%

Conquest game mode (128 players):

cpu temp: 60 degrees

cpu usage: 100%
gpu temp: 60-64 degrees

gpu usage: 1-3%

Warzone 2 (mostly high but some normal settings):

cpu temp: 62-63 degrees

cpu usage: 92-95%
gpu temp: 72-75 degrees

gpu usage: 1%

Thanks again

So by the data posted. You're getting a CPU bottleneck (looks like you have a GPU usage bug but the CPU is 100% bottlenecking). Your temperatures are fine.

Anyway someone else can jump in if they think I am wrong but your FPS are consistent with your specs. You're playing very demanding CPU intensive scenes the more players that are in a given game the more CPU power will be demanded. Your CPU is a 4/4 which by todays standards isn't ideal for these kind of games.

Ok, thank you

Do the new ryzen 5000 processors still use AM4, or do they use a new socket? And would I see a reasonable performance increase if I upgraded CPU?

Edit: I also noticed that in game, changing settings to all low don’t seem to help performance.

The 5600 would support your motherboard so no need to upgrade that. You will however need to do a bios update before putting the 5600 in the motherboard for it to be supported.

As for the reasonable performance increase:

This should help make the game's feel smoother and will raise your FPS a bit, you would then be GPU bound below is what your GPU is roughly capable of when not CPU bound.
