Hey guys, I'm building a PC right now and all I have is a graphics card, the gtx 760. My current pc is an old dell but with a 400w psu. I was wondering if putting the gpu into this pc until I upgrade would be a good idea. The recommended psu is 500w but since the only power-hungry part is the gpu would it ruin the card?

depends on the rest of your system. give us some more info and also: Is the case equipped with any ventilation? a friend did that once, upgrading a pre-built system with a better card......well thermals were not the best and the gpu got fried.....

The case has two fans and runs pretty cool on the games I can play, it has a core 2 duo with 4 gb ram. I'll be getting all new parts this month

If it's a good 400w (which I strongly suspect it isn't) it will run it ok, but on your config I'd just wait until you have the rest of your parts and keep the nice new card in it's box safe and sound.

If it's from a Dell, it's probably okay. Dell tend to use fairly high quality OEM PSUs

2nd on earth? lol, I would just get a 750ti. Little power, still powerful most likely to not bottle neck whatever you have.

I already have the 760, I just want a little better performance in games (like Minecraft) until I get the rest of the parts. The CPU is going to be an FX 6300

well if it's as old as you stated, it'll bottleneck like hell, but you can throw that card in temporarily wile saving for a new more GTX760 suitable Rig, have to upgrade the hole thing

I'd honestly wait for a while until you have enough money for the whole rig. Thing is cheap Power supply means high ripple and high ripple means faster wearout on your parts. Another problem might be the lack of protection technology like over current protection, over voltage protection and stuff like this - so if the Power supply goes pop, other parts could get damaged as well. That's why you never cheap out on a power supply and it's the same reason why I wouldn't connect modern hardware to an old power supply.

But if you're going to upgrade anyway, couldn't you just buy a decent power supply first? Would be a much safer approach in my opinion.

Found an EVGA 500w 80+ bronze for $30 on newegg, along with a combo of the rest of the parts for $230 on sale :)

Which one is it exactly?

Well this one is VERY cheap. And to a point where I wouldn't trust it to be a high quality product. Also I can't find any reviews for it whatsoever and the haswell powersaving compatability isn't mentioned on the EVGA website which is a bit odd. I wouldn't call it a save bet.

What about this one instead?

Ripple with this is still higher than on my Corsair CX600m, although this is one of the cheapest 600Watt PSUs you can get.

Considering that the model you picked is even cheaper than that I wouldn't put my trust into that.

I did a little bit of research and what I found out is that the lower end power Supplies (including the one I just linked) are actually build by HEC, which are lower than average quality.

On the other hand all Corsair PSUs are build by CWT which is considered to be a very high quality manufacturer up with seasonic.

Here's a list of power supplies and their actual manufacturers and googling the OEM did the rest.

http://www.realhardtechx.com/index_archivos/Page2293.htm

So, the high end Power supplies are build by super flower which is as good as it gets but HEC is propably better than the average china cracker but not much better than that.

So I'd recommend this one as a good cheap PSU:
