Need a Good Modem + Router, sick of unstable crap!

nukem

hey guys, so unfortunately i am not able to connect to my home network via an ethernet cable, so i have to use wifi... sigh  anyway i currently have..

An All in one ADSL2+ Modem Router (TP-Link TD-W8980) , running a 2.4ghz and 5ghz Wireless N signals.

I dont know weither or not its a bad router, or what.. but ive gone through like 3 different Wireless N PCI-E adapters because i thought that was the issue, but it doesnt seem to change much.

Basically i get random dropouts, fluctuating speeds while downloading and randomly my 5ghz band will just disappear and come back randomly. ( I get Full bars of signal according to windows)

So im thinking maybe Modem+router combos arent that good? perhaps i need to move to a stable dedicated adsl2 modem with a nice wireless AC router running a custom firmware like openwrt or ddwrt or something? and a AC wifi adapter.

im not much of a networking guy so any advise will be appreciated!

Im prepared to spend a decent amount.. maybe 4-500 all up as long as i get a stable connection (as stable as wifi can possibly be).

thanks

what's your budget for a router? i recommend Asus RT-66U/R or if you want more speed, the AC-68U/R

i dont mind spending to get sumthing good, the one i have now i payed $160 AUD for i think.. but dont mind going higher if its substantially better. dont really wanna spend more than say 3-350$ for everything.

I can vouch for the AC-68U. Our old router kept disconnecting from the internet, but the 68U is rock solid.
