If you don't have the baking soda, just use a clean dry cotton bud, that also works. Clean because EAR WAX and dry because there's no need as the texture of the bud itself - and the additional benefit of no cleanup. You can dampen it slightly if you must but there is no real need to.

It wlll just take a few seconds longer either way.
