Odd boot issue

I am using old hardware while i work on upgrades and have been having a weird boot issue. My computer black screens every once and a while and I have been having issues after editing settings in the bios. These are leading to the computer not posting and getting a flashing 90 and 99 error upon boot. The solution has obviously been to reset the cmos battery but this doesn't work every time. The only full proof solution has been to boot without an peripheral or wifi adapter connected. I found this solution in some other forum but without an explanation as to why the usb devices are potentially causing boot issues. I am less worried about the boot issues and just curious as to why that solution has been the only full proof one. Any ideas?

CPU: I7 4790k

Ram: 16gb of something

storage: 1 tb nvme

gpu: 6800 reference

When was the last time you replaced the CMOS battery?? Check the battery with a battery tester or just replace the battery if you don't recall ever changing it.

Never replaced it. Will give it a try. Never kept a mobo over 2-3 years, so didn't know replacing it every 5 was normal

I had my MSI Z97 Gaming 5 from 2015 to 2019, put back in box and stored away for 2 years. Go to use the board to troubleshoot and the battery was dead, BIOS was acting funky, and system overall. Checked the battery and it was low so I replaced with another and it was good as new.
