Data Transfer from old HDD to SSD

Hi Guys

 

Over the years of constant computer upgrades, I have traditionally transferred my old HDD to the new computer and just used it as extra storage

I now have 3 x 1TB HDD 

of those 3 HDDs, two of them are at capacity with the 3rd one starting to fill up

 

My current OS is booting from a small 256GB SSD

 

What I would like to do is either buy one or 2 large SSD and use them as storage and throw away the old HDD

 

My question is, what would be the best way of doing this?

I foresee obvious time issues and possible stability problems

Do I trust windows to do the transfer or do I use another program

 

any assistance or suggestions would be much appreciated

If it's just data, which it sounds like it is if you can just move it as storage from PC to PC, you can drop and drag from the HDD to SDD in Windows.  

 

You can also clone the drive with either free software (Macrium Reflect) or if you have a Samsung drive you can get their Migration Software. 

 

Either way works fine for data.

Just copy the files over first, then once the copy is successful, you can remove the old files.

What time issues do you mean? just the time it would take to transfer? there is no way around that.

stability is fine. that is why you copy first instead of move, if the transfer fails from a power loss or something, you can just try again.

 

if you are on windows you can use a piece of software called teracopy which has options for validating transfers after they occur to give you more peace of mind about the success of the operation. It will report any failed transfer for you to try again.
