What is the maximum clock speed you should clock

 

For your current laptop processor, I wouldn't go higher than 3Ghz. That is, if you can overclock it at all. The heat output and by association maximum recomended clockspeed varies depending on the CPU model. For the desktop, an Ivy bridge CPU could easilly achieve 5Ghz with a good cooler, but Haswell CPUs struggle to reach 4.5Ghz without becoming unstable due to overheating. There is no universal 'maxmum clock speed'.

It would shut down. I tried to oc my athlon x2 7750be to 6ghz at 2.0Volts and it just crashed

In overclocking the clocks themselves aren't problem. The voltage needed to run it stable is. High volts will kill any cpu and even running them just bit over safe limit will reduce lifetime of that cpu. 30% overclock is good anyday.

its sandy that does 5ghz. ivy take effort to get to 5ghz

Intel's Tejas was designed to run at 10ghz but it was canceled because instructions couldnt run that fast
