I'm planning to build a new "higher end" mid range PC. The rig will be used for about 3-4 years (probably with some upgrades in 2024/2025)

But I am not completely sure about the CPU + Motherboard (AM4 discontinued in 2022; support for LGA1700 at least until 2023).

Both of the combos you have spec'd will last 3-4 years, and both will almost certainly require a new mobo if you decide to upgrade at that time.

You can try building one on the AM5 platform, but in 3-4 years time you can probably expect the hardware will mature and grow to where you may not want to just throw in  a new CPU as you may end up missing out on additional features built into the platform by that point.

Build a solid pc with reliable hardware and you'll probably be much happier later on than if you try to go bleeding edge now.  You'll also be saving a bit of money going for the 12th gen or the 5600 over trying to 'future proof' this system.  Put the extra money you *would* have spent to go AM5 into a savings account and you can always use it for your upgrade budget later.

CPU: Ryzen 5 5600X  | Motherboard: ASROCK B450 pro4 | RAM: 2x16GB  | GPU: MSI NVIDIA RTX 2060 | Cooler: Noctua NH-U9S | SSD: Samsung 980 Evo 1T

  • Video Card: Gigabyte GAMING OC Radeon RX 6700 XT 12 GB Video Card  ($497.97 @ Amazon)
  • Case: be quiet! Pure Base 500DX ATX Mid-Tower Case  ($109.90 @ B&H)
  • Power Supply: SeaSonic FOCUS Plus Platinum 750 W 80+ Platinum Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply  ($159.99 @ B&H)

Total: $1303.80

I would recommend this build as it should improve on the reliability and longevity of the system while leaving room for upgrades. The main upgrades/swapped components are the SSD, PSU, and RAM. The CS3030 SSD uses really high quality controllers and NAND flash. The RAM I swapped as patriot has been selling really reliable memory for a bit now, and you can usually find it's a better value than other brands.

Just pay the few dollars extra for the B660 Gaming X AX, same board but comes with built in Wi-Fi so you won’t have to worry about getting an expensive wi-fi card as a really good card is already included and you won’t need to give up a PCIe slot.

Don't worry about socket longevity. It really doesn't make a difference in the vast majority of cases.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.
