Hey guys and girls,

I am looking to build a new gaming rig in the next few months, given that my old rig is getting on a bit (abt 4y old). Given all the tech news of the last weeks with the new releases I am considering not actually going for the new releases. The new RTX's are too expensive for my taste. I was considering a 7 series Ryzen CPU (they are not ridiculously overpriced).

But given the latest review of LTT, would it not be a smarter choice to go with the r7 5800x 3d instead, as I mostly use the rig for gaming (and some low end workstation stuff nothing heavy). It seems to do almost as well as the r9 7950x? Also given the lower costs of the AM4 motherboards and DDR4.

Also in terms of GPU: what would be better a 3080Ti, or a RX6900xt. I am in doubt, given that the amd GPU is better in concert with an AMD CPU because of smart access memory, but the RTX line alledgedly better at raytracing (which will in all probability be more and more available on new games. So what given current info would be your choice on this.

I think I will await the new AMD GPU announcements anyway, maybe they are even better and reasonably priced, But I'm not holding my breath, and I like to know my alternatives beforehand.

So what are your thoughts, My budget will be around 2k, so go for current gen higher level kit, or buy a lower tier next gen CPU.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Budget (including currency): 2k euro

Country: Netherlands

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Single Player gaming mostly, I only play Elder Scroll Online in multiplayer, and even then rarely PvP.

Other details : for monitors i'll go with a dual 1440p 27inch setup. Which ones will be determined later.

CPU  wise 5800x3D really only makes sense right now IF you already have a AM4 Mobo with support. If you have to buy all the parts, id probably lean towards 12700k or 5700x. Both next gens will be pretty expensive so it really doesnt make sense to buy them if your just gaming, wait for b650 and hope they too arent stupid expensive, or just bite the bullet.

3080ti is a pretty bad buy at this point for what they will cost in the EU. Your choice will be between if you can find a decent used 3090ti, 3080, or buy the 6900xt. Dont buy for future ray-tracing support, its dumb and you wont like the performance. Theres a reason why most game devs STILL dont make it a priority, its only added after because most people simply dont care for the visuals with how much performance tanks.

You dont need the newest stuff to be happy, especially if you arent doing competitive gaming, if you are doing single player games its not like you need the cutting edge, you need good quality performance. Stick to whats best priced in your area 🙂 Im not too sure what the difference is there in pricing for 6900xt, 6800xt and 3000 series products, but def look at the used market if you can.
