I run a plex server on a Qnap TVS-h1288x. I was running 8x6Tb WD Red Pro drives in raid 6, but was running out of space.

So I took the plunge on 8x WD DC HC560 Ultrastar 20Tb drives, I ran WD data lifeguard diagnostics extended test over them all and had no errors, so went ahead and did the 1 by 1 swap them in, let it rebuild, swap the next one in until they're all done, expand the storage pool, and the thick volume I'm running in it after that. All seemed to go well, except that midway though the process, i decided to use Qnaps built in performance tests and noted a significant drop in performance over my red pro drives. Worse than that was the variance between the new drives was up around 50mb/s. Where my red pro's were all within 5mb/s or so, and like 1 iop difference. I've retested it several times since, and each drive is getting wildly different numbers each time.

Does anyone know of a good reason for this? Or is there some *nix magic trick to get my Qnap using these drives properly?

My nas is working OK, but it is definitely not coping with any heavy workloads like it was before.

Cheers!
