are these compatible?

Go to solution Solved by HanZie82,

Ask the seller to make sure its ready for the 5600G and you should be fine.

As the motherboard would need an update (if it hasnt had one already) to make the 5600G work.
And for that it would need a CPU thats currently compatible to do the updating.
But thats out for a while now, so while most motherboards are nicely updated, PCpartpicker might be slow on the uptake. 😉

for my build i am planning on using an

AMD Ryzen 5 5600G

with a

MSI B550M PRO

pc part picker says they are not compatible and will need a BIOS update. i did some research on google and some sources say newer boards are compatible straight out of the box, and other sources say it needs the update.

has anyone had experience with this combination and can they share their experience?

5600G is supported starting from bios version 25, as this page shows:  https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/B550M-PRO/support#cpu

Version 25 was released on 2021-07-01, which is almost a year ago. The list of bioses is here: https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/B550M-PRO/support#bios

If you buy a motherboard fresh off Amazon or some store that moves merchandise fast, chances are good you're gonna get a motherboard with the bios or a newer one already installed.

Otherwise, you'd have to use another supported CPU (Ryzen 3xxx or newer) to update the bios, as this particular model doesn't support Bios flashback (updating the bios without cpu installed in socket)

Typically it takes 3-4 months or more for a motherboard to be shipped from Taiwan or China on a shipping container, be released from customs, go through distributors and then reach a store, and the factory will not use the absolute latest bios just in case it turns out there's some serious bug discovered just after they ship the boards and then they'd have to recall them.

So, assume most motherboards will have a 6-8 months old bios... and that bios being 1 year old would give you a good chance it will have that or a newer one.

Processor support list for this board indicates it does support the 5600G, however, it may or may not require a BIOS update depending on when it was built and what BIOS version it shipped with. Basically, the board itself should be compatible as "5000-Ready", but the BIOS update may be necessary for the board to recognize the newer CPU. HOWEVER...

Not likely to be that much of an issue these days. I built a 5900X six months ago with a board that was built Jan 2022 and no update was required. The update is not that big a deal anyway with most. Some boards even support BIOS updates from a dedicated USB port with no CPU installed. Otherwise, an older CPU supported by the current BIOS version is required for the update. But as I said, not so likely to be an issue these days. Most, if not all, of those earlier 5000-ready boards with older BIOS versions have already been sold and used, with newer ones already having the necessary update.
