Does integrated graphics actually do anything??

It puts images on your monitor without needing a dedicated GPU.

 

If it's an Intel processor with integrated graphics, it can do Quick Sync hardware video encoding.

It does work indeed, but like a very very bad GPU, something like a GT630

So it's ok for office work browsing etc but not for any gaming except superlight games @720p

And this is actually the 'budget' way of video editing without using discrete graphics tbh. Be wary to not use any old-school Xeon-based (like Ivy Bridge on mine) CPUs though if you plan to use for editing and render much using QSV. QSV simply won't work, even it's available on Intel's ARK web, I don't know why but I tried months to solve it, and nyeh let it be.

 

In laptops, instead of using the discrete GPU that will actually kill the battery faster, iGPU is used instead while you're using it 'normally': browsing, or else. Discrete GPU would simply be used when it's asked to, for example while you're gaming.

 

Integrated graphics nowadays are actually got heck of some performance improvements nowadays (but don't expect it would perform as the dedicated ones), proved by loads of handheld PCs like Steam Deck or else are using Radeon Vega.

 

Yes, it won't game much on higher resolution like 1080p or even more, but as for budget reasons it's actually some reasonable way to use the PC and do some little gaming without discrete graphics. I personally did this to my PC while GPUs are crazy expensive (Intel HD P4000 on my Xeon E3-1225 v2), and I run it only on 1366x768 anyway and it could still get 60 fps in Dota 2 (drops to 20 when in huge wars though), and yes, it won't be pretty but at least I could make myself refreshed enough than nothing.

my 5600gs integrated gpu got me through the gpu shortage. i played quite a few reletivle new games at 1080p-900p

Can u use it to improve your graphics. I have a 3060 ti. Would it improve the fps I'm getting in games. If so how much would it improve

I believe they can be used independently of each other for dual monitor setups, but not like you're thinking.

I ran BF4 MP-64p at 720p Low with Medium Textures on my HD4000 OC to 1450Mhz (i7 4790K) around 45-50FPS, give or take.

Also encoding jobs were faster using the iGPU, however lower quality at same bitrates than CPU alone encoding, but still faster.

Hardware acceleration allowing for YT 720p/1080p60 not using the CPU to draw frames at higher CPU loads..

 

They have their uses.
