can I have a os on a exeternal hard drive

In general there is no difference in installing something on the internal or an external drive / usb thumb drive. What OS do you plan to be installing?

In case you use it with a seperate boot loader make shure the boot order is set correctly in the BIOS or boot from the boot menu.
