I hear people say "this motherboard is great for o.c. Because it has great heat witthstandment" or "this one is great for o.c. Because it has a fast chipset" or "you dont need a good mobo for o.c. You just need a good cooler"

So what makes a good o.c. Mobo? And what would you suggest for the AM3+ line of cpus?

Can't really go wrong with a mobo from Asus, Gigabyte, or MSI. Pick one from the list that has the features you want in the pricepoint you need

Do any of them melt out if you o.c. Too much? And im not touching asus mobos ever again...helped a friend build his rig this weekend and that damn mobo gave us so many errors it was ridiculous. It took us almost 12 hours to get that damn thing running.

Eh, if you run enough voltage through anything it'll melt.

Good voltage regulation/power delivery and vrms that stay cool whether it be due simply to design or the heatsink make a good overclocking motherboard.

Basically, a board that can properly and smoothly supply the power needed for your cpu. It's kind of like how a good cup should be able carry a large amount of liquid without falling apart.

As for the motherboard, it's hard to go wrong with the 990fxa-ud3.

this is what makes a good oc board:

no frills-what is audio can i hear it at -170c?

all the power phases. more= better most of the time. the gigabyte z77 ud7 has 32 power phases. its epic.

all the buttons on the board- gigabyte z87x oc force has buttons to do all ocing and resets and bios switches and pcie lane switchers

ps2 port for the keyboard

loads and loads and loads of advanced settings in the bios to tweak everything, so that you can get every single last point.

all electrical tracks are perfect lengths so that timings for ram and gpus are perfect and as fast as possible.

excellent bios that is easy to use while still have all the settings. also a dual bios and a very stable bios with regular updates to improve ram compatibility and stability.

lots of cpu power and extra gpu power connector on the board in good places.

designed to be on a test bench rather than in a case.

Rig Specs:

AMD Threadripper 5990WX@4.8Ghz

Asus Zenith III Extreme

Asrock OC Formula 7970XTX Quadfire

G.Skill Ripheartout X OC 7000Mhz C28 DDR5 4X16GB
