You'll have to really force cables in to be putting them in the wrong spots. Your main power cables are keyed so unless you start putting enough force to bend the plastic housing, you're not going to be able to plug them in wrong.

That being said, replacement cables for modular power supplies is often where most people get things wrong when problems do happen. So if you are planning to swap out the OEM PSU cables, check in to make sure they're compatible. While the end that plugs into the motherboard are standard, the end that plugs into the actual PSU aren't. So there have been cases where replacement cables led 12Vs going to somewhere that should be 5V or ground, causing some amazing fireworks.

Data cables are the same thing. For instance, SATA is keyed so that it can only be plugged in one way. The same goes for M.2 SATA and M.2 PCIe. So you're very unlikely to get those wrong unless you again, start putting enough pressure to bend the plastic housing. Or in the case of M.2 SSDs... crack the PCB.
