Well what is going on when you want to unplug it?

 

At worst you should shut down and unplug it.

Hahaha. I shut it down, just to be sure. It's less hassle than having a corrupted hdd full with vital files.

Usually occurs when you have an app that open or saved data to the hdd still running. i.e. virtual clone drive has a mounted iso/image from the hdd.
