AOC 3477 help

Hi, just paired my new Ryzen 5700g build to an AOC 3477 ultrawide monitor. It won't go any higher than 30hz at 3440x1440 . Monitor says its capable of this, is the 5700g not?

Might be a limit of your motherboard, rather than the CPU. Which motherboard did you use?

Just checked, monitor and motherboard and of course the 5700g should be capeable over HDMI.

Have you tried setting a custom resolution or have you only tried the available Windows options?

From the information from https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/X570-AORUS-PRO-rev-10#kf

This motherboard only support HDMI and it is HDMI 2.0 and it support up to 4096x2160@60 Hz.

 

You shouldn't get 30hz. Sound weird.

 

Try update the motherboard bios to see any changes or not.

 

Also check your monitor menu to see whether got setting to choose HDMI 1.4 or 2.0

LG and Samsung do have this setting and you need to change it.

Its the Aorus pro wifi v1.0 It has 2 hdmi and display port

Got the latest MB bios, needed that for the 5700g

You should give a full name, earlier you said Aorus Pro X570 and Aorus Pro X570 and Aorus pro wifi is different. Also by telling Aorus pro wifi give many model with different chipset. The X570 AORUS PRO WIFI also don't see mentioned got DP and only 1x HDMI as well - https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/X570-AORUS-PRO-WIFI-rev-10#kf

 

Also I cannot find your monitor, no monitor call AOC 3477, do have U3477.

 

A single missing wording can lead to wrong information as model name is very similar nowsday.

Haven't quite got the same things. Got the newer adrenaline software. allows custom res setting but stops me going to 60hz. Would the cable stop it attaining a higher refresh rate?

Maybe? I'm not entirely sure if a cable could cause such an issue, but I wouldn't rule it out either. It's also the cheapest troubleshooting option, so why not give it a shot and get another cable?

Just ordered one from amazon. Just missed out on next day delivery. Nice monitor though, ultrawide might take a bit of getting used to but having the extra space for my astrophoto editing will be nice,

If your cable is older HDMI 1.4 then this will be the issue. Normally the monitor came with the cable and it will came with the latest version that monitor support. So the bundle HDMI 2.0 cable should do it fine.

Its a used monitor. eBay bargain. Just grabbed a cable from the drawer. Is Display port or HDMI better?

Cables do not have specifications in the sense that a port has a specification. All HDMI cables have the same amount of pins, but they're simply tested and rated for certain speeds. From my experience cables do either function at the correct frequency and resolution, or they start to flicker or not work at all. 

 

That's why I'm not sure if a cable would even fix this issue, no matter what it is rated for. I haven't experienced a cable ever causing an issue where only lower resolutions or frequencies are available and I don't think it's expected behavior.

Cable is making an important part same as the port. It do look same but the bandwidth is not same and cable do have specification. Well known brand cable did not simply test and simply rating. Off course those unknown very cheap cable might simply rate and not meet the suppose label requirement.

 

For example a HDMI version 1 4 cable definitely cannot fulfill the bandwidth requirement of HDMI 2.0 port.

For 3440x1440 144hz normally required DP, also if future you are buying Nvidia GPU then only DP can give you G-sync support as HDMI only latest version 2.1 support G-sync. This also apply to AMD GPU Freesync. 

 

It is better and safe to get the DP v1.4 even though your monitor only support up to v1.2 but v1.4 can be more future proof.

And that is where you are wrong. It absolutely can. There are cables that weren't even around when modern HDMI specifications were created and yet they work just fine. Keep in mind cables are passive objects that do not decide anything. A controller behind an HDMI port on the other hand can artificially create a limit to a bandwith.

 

And this is exactly why I said that I do not know how a cable would impact the frequency in case of signal drop. I don't think it would simply cause a certain frequency to not show up anymore, as soon as a low quality cable is connected, as there wouldn't be any way for the display or the computer to tell that they are connected to a low quality cable. I would expect the signal to simply drop out and create a temporary black screen.

Go use HDMI 1.4 cable and attached to 5120x1440 Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 monitor and try running it 120hz (I did not said 240hz as that only DP can do even though my monitor is equipped with HDMI 2.1) or any 4K  TV and running it as well 120hz see you can get it or not. The 120hz will not show up in your display control panel at all for you to choose.

 

Earlier no label as no standard is out and now it is label as version for easier understanding by consumer instead of label it as bandwidth. The bandwidth information is written at the description is far than enough.
