Hey guys, I was considering starting 3D Design, more so to try and make video games. Was wondering what kind of computer I should build for the editing and what software would be good to start with. Budget I would go for 4,000 USD or roughly around that (including monitor(s)). The rig woud be used for a workstation and gaming. I need to upgrade my rig because this one has been giving me issues and is about 4 gens out dated. I already have Win 7 so I won't be needing a OS to buy (not a Mac fan).

3D work for video games are relatively light especially when just starting out. It would help to have more details.

Edit: You could start by listing your current specs, programs being used, and what kind of projects you're working on.

Unless you have unlimited funds, more factors come into play.

Sorry, I did a quick scan of where to post and wasn't able to find one. I figured New builds was for showing off a recently built rig.

You don't need to pay $4000.

It depends on alot of factors. What software are you using for modelling? What game engine you're using?

i5 4670k @ 4.2GHz (Coolermaster Hyper 212 Evo); ASrock Z87 EXTREME4; 8GB Kingston HyperX Beast DDR3 RAM @ 2133MHz; Asus DirectCU GTX 560; Super Flower Golden King 550 Platinum PSU;1TB Seagate Barracuda;Corsair 200r case.

Build logs are for showing off the build process of a system. New Builds and Planning is for planning a new build and upgrades.

I've just been saving up and thats about the max I would be able to spend. As for any of that I'm not sure, I like to wok my way to hi res games, but need to start off with the basics. So I was just curious as what type of hardware I'd be needing and what software so I'm not exaclty sure. One of my friend told me for the more advanced work I would need a quadro graphics card to help speed things up, more/faster RAM.

I do 3D design with Blender on a laptop that has a Core 2 Duo Mobile..... any PC with more than 2 cores and a dedicated GPU can make video games.... but I reccommend a GTX 770 (from EVGA) and a i7 4670k if you have the money. I'm talking from experience.

Unless you're working with 10-bit images, project viewports prone to crashing, or some specific renderers, a ws card is unnecessary.

When you start doing lots of physics calculations you start running out of ram fast! I'd recommend getting 16GB+. Then again it depends on what you're doing

CPU: Intel 3570 GPUs: Nvidia GTX 660Ti Case: Fractal design Define R4  Storage: 1TB WD Caviar Black & 240GB Hyper X 3k SSD Sound: Custom One Pros Keyboard: Ducky Shine 4 Mouse: Logitech G500

It depends on preference, you can use Cryengine, Source, or Unreal engine, it's all feature preference, Blender is fine for games but if you think the investment is worth it, other paid programs are good too. These are your tools, just pick which one you think you will use.
