Hi there,

Heading back to school and going to need a pc. Going to make the best of it and build a gaming pc. My first build. Havent gamed in years but was always interested in racing and flight sim, rpg and fps. I remember playing Battlefield 2 back in the day, what a blast. Done a bit of research online and this is what ive come up with. Budget around 2000 to 2500 CAD

Questions...

Any opinions on the motherboard?

Will 550 watt psu be enough?

Liquid cooler vs fan? Would i benefit with a liquid cooler, or would a fan be fine for this build?

Thoughts on the gpu? Others i have considered

I'd go with something like this instead

https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/6ZHNBj

I'd get the 12400f instead since they're the same cpu with the 5600x being slower in single core workloads

Cheap cpu cooler since a 360 for a 5600 is not needed at all

Good board for the price

Cheapest kit of 32gb ram

Decent 2tb storage instead of 1tb split in 2 places

3080 instead of a 6700xt, which on the amd side is close to a 6900xt

Nice case and a good quality 850 watt psu

That cooler is extreme overkill for that cpu. It would be fine with AMD's stock cooler, or you could get a Noctua NH-u12 if you really want to. You be better off taking that money and putting into a better GPU. Your choice of mother board is fine, but why do you have two different SSD's. Personally, I get the NVME for a boot drive, and then a high capacity HDD, like a 8tb WD black for more storage. And if you're only gaming you really don't need 32gb of ram, 2x8gb sticks would be fine. That case is way too expensive as well. Get one for about $50 and you could afford a 5800x and a 3080 for the same price.

I never really saw the point of having wifi on a motherboard for a desktop. if you really need it, just get a wifi dongle off amazon for $20. And I forgot to upgrade the PSU. you'll need a good 850w to run a 3080. EVGA has one for less than $100 and you'll still be in budget.

  • 2 weeks later...

Okay so i still havent made the purchase yet. Did some more research and came up with this. I switched over to an Intel cpu which seems to be the better choise in that price range. Theres 3 gpu's in there but im wondering what the real difference between them all. Obviously id be just choosing one of then, not some duel set up or anything. They all seem in more or less my price range. I had my eye on th 3070 but its quite a bit more expensice. Also i read about ssd. SN770's vs SN870's. Really dont think theres a yuge difference. What are your thoughts on all this? Again just looking to build a mid range gaming set up and for use going back to school doing online course. Thanks. Hopefully going to order everthing today
