Any way to have my camera stop turning display off while filming?

I would like to use an old TV monitor of mine connected to my Nikon D5100 (over the composite vid out) to monitor while recording. But while recording a video, the external display is disabled and it does not send any video down HDMI or composite... is there any fix to this, or will I just have to keep using the small screen on the camera?
