So I've been looking for a new card recently somewhat for funsies and somewhat seriously wanting a new card and I've been somewhat stuck between the r9 280x or the gtx770.  Which one would you guys say is better?  This would just be for gaming wtih like editing every couple of months so that's not that important.  Also just from what I've heard the 770 isn't really that worth it compared to the cheaper 760.  Is there any truth behind that?  Thanks

I think the 770 is actually a fair bit better than the 760, but I think the r9 280x is a little bit faster in some games than the 770, but you are getting some really useful software with the 770

The r9 280x is a rebatched 7970 and a gtx 770 is a rebatched 680. They are pretty euqal. In my mind Nvida atm has the better software featuers so if it's the same price get the 770. Also i wouldn't say that as the difference between a 760 and a 770 is about 30% and the price difference is only 80$ or so.

R9 - mantle, 3gb vram (only useful for higer res gaming)

GTX - gsync, shadowplay, 3d vision, physx.

Performance is neck and neck. Margin of error. So choose on the features you want/need

Don't recommend 4GB 770 for high res gaming, if you like Nvidia and want high res gaming get the 780.

but it's lower price, and a larger frame buffer is useful large highly detailed textures :P;)

Only if the card is powerful enough.

the 770 is as powerful as it gets for it's price range, and it's got a wide memory bus

770 doesn't have enough bus width & bandwidth to use 4GB vram. It's just for marketing, for people who think "more GB more beast".

True, but it does exploit it some how to drive larger textures, because it will just find more Vram space to writ on some extra textures, but should of said this before, and you know this 2~3GB max  *is the sweet spot for 1080p Gaming, 4GB with wider bus 256~512 for 1440p, still you're right about the bus width, but WE can't be fouled by that can we

Actually it can use it... About 3.2gb continuously. There ae two ways about going to use lots of ram. Amds way, with slow ram but a wide bus, and nvs way, with uberfast ram and a comparatively narrow bus.

I have a 770 4gb with ram at 8.1ghz and have found to be continously using around 3.2-3.4gigs in highres.

The 280X overclocks really well due to the unlocked voltages & the Asus DCII  280X cooler is superior to any other aftermarket cooler on the 770.
Because Asus is using the 780 cooler for the 280X. You get 3GB of memory which is going to be a life saver in upcoming games, BF4 already uses 1.6GB+ that's dangerously close to maxing out the frame buffer on the 770.

You also get Mantle with the 280X and an insanely good game bundle.
