RE: Corning Optical Thunderbolt 4 ?

kethrin

Hi the forum,

I've read here that there's no difference between a thunderbolt 3 and 4 cable as long as it supports 40 Gpbs, does that mean the Corning Optical cable can be used for thunderbolt 4 or would it fallback down to 3 ?

Trying to figure out if it's worth paying extra for a thunderbolt MB. The alternative is Optical displayport and Optical usb, although I'm really not looking forward to running connectors that big through the walls ..

If that's a better way to go though I'd also gladly take advice on these, Optical usb cables look like a minefield.

Thanks !

There is no fallback that I am aware.  Thunderbolt4 is a spec change but not a protocol change.  From a user perspective they’re the same thing.  It was mostly about the USB consortium and USB4 (which intel thinks is probably impossible and likely to be at best a big mess) so they left the consortium and made Thunderbolt4 just to be shut of them.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Life is like a bowl of chocolates: there are all these little crinkly paper cups everywhere.
