Budget (including currency): 1500 - 2000 CAD

Country: Canada

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Mostly play lightweight games now(terraria, minecraft, hollowknight), would like flexibility to play AAA games, will be used for CAD

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): would like to be able to play most games 1080p 60fps at moderate/high settings

It's my first desktop computer and I have no clue what I'm doing. I have monitors, some drives, and a keyboard/mouse already. I am completely lost when it comes to what to pick for parts and this was recommended this by a friend. Any feedback would be awesome.

CAD as in AutoCAD?

I've used CAD and any decent laptop could run it good enough.

If yes, your CPU and RAM is way too overkill.

Personally, I'd allocate some budget for a display, a quality display truly affects the experience you will have.

Having such a powerful rig with an old display is not good, literally wasting the capabilities of the rig.

With Ryzen 5000 series, you would need to update the BIOS, if I were new to PCs, I'd stick with the simple stuff.

Going with Intel 12th gen would be much easier and could be cheaper.

My recommendation for 1080p gaming and CAD.

CPU: i3-12100 because you're new to PC, an integrated GPU could be a life saver.

CPU Cooler: No need to go with Noctua for an i3-12100

Better case better quality PSU, added an SSD.

Personally, leftovers could be allocated to quality display or better CPU/GPU/more RAM, up to you.

Occassionaly visits the forum when I have nothing to do at work.

I'd probably get a different case, that one is pretty meh for the price. Check out some of GamersNexus's case round ups, and pick the one you like most. Build looks fine, though that's a ton of RAM. Not sure if CAD work makes use of it. You should try and go for at least 3200mhz RAM, make sure it's on the QVL list for the motherboard (can be found on the manufacturer website).

About what id reccommend

https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/H97NY9

The 12700f is a pretty good choice in comparison to the 5900x since it's the same speed in multi core and faster in single core for cheaper

Cheap aftermarket cooler that's a solid performer for the price

Good board for the price

Are you sure you would see 64gb of utilization in your software? 32gb should be sufficient

Cheap 1tb storage

Cheapest 3070

Nice case and a decent 750 watt psu

CAD as in Soildworks. Sorry, I should've specified. I will also look into getting a better monitor, I have a pretty cheap one right now, thanks for the tip.

I will look into getting a different case. Also thanks for the reminder about QVL, I didn't think about that.

Thanks for the recommendation. I will definitely consider looking at what intel has.

Thanks for all the feedback, I'll do some more looking and redo the part list. I know I'm probably stressing too much about this but I don't wanna screw it up. I really appreciate all the help, thanks so much!

Here's an altered parts list

https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/GFyYRv

I reduced the ram, changed coolers, and picked a better(?) case

I know the 12700f is a bit better when it comes to pretty much everything but, the ilm bending the cpus in the intel 12 gen socket makes me uneasy. Is that something I should be concerned about? If not I'd switch the cpu and the motherboad to intel 12 gen. Thanks for all the help!

Iirc gamersnexus did a video on this

You can buy the thermalright frame for if a had to guess 10-12 cad considering they're about 7 dollars on aliexpress currently if you're concerned about the mounting pressure, though I don't think it effects lower end cpus a lot ( I could be wrong)

So if you want to bother with this then go ahead, but if you want to stick to ryzen I'd get a better cpu cooler and a better mobo, because while the Asus prime x570 isn't bad, it's a cheaper lineup and you can get great b550s for the same price point.

I personally wouldn't say that the p300 mesh is better than the p400a digital, but if you like the look of it, then you can get it if you want, it's personal preference : )

I think I'm going to probably stick with ryzen then. I'm not super confidant in my ability to use the mounting frame right an the bending makes me a bit uncomfortable. I really appreciate all the help though! Thanks for all the tips, it really helped make this so much easier.

Due to some parts not existing at the store I'd prefer to buy from I re-did the part list. Have I screwed anything up?

Make sure you quote or @Ryuikkoso we can see replies

https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/LWwNY9

Only a couple of changes

I'd get a better cooler for cheaper

3600 cl16 ram for ryzens infinity fabric

Better gpu and a better psu for only 5 bucks more. If you want to be decently under budget, you can go with a 6750xt and Still have a good experience
