OS preference? Windows 7 / 8 / 8.1? If it's for pure gaming, why not consider something like SteamOS?

Decided to go with a motherboard with 4 DIMM slots for future upgradability and an 5ms IPS monitor. If you want to cut back on these to save that extra $60, then please do.

APUs are shit honestly. 750/760k and a cheap gpu is the way to go.

your wrong 110%(imo) get the apu and then you can get a way better gpu with a good apu

Here's an Intel build which can play most games at minimum settings.

Hope it helps! :)

But if he is getting a gpu anyways just go for a normal cpu. APU's are only worth the money if you are not getting a gpu.

Go with the athlon 760k + R7 260x

For $650 this is a pretty good build:

CPU:  AMD Athlon X4 760K 3.8GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($84.73 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard:  MSI A88XM-E45 Micro ATX FM2+ Motherboard  ($78.66 @ Newegg)
Memory:  Kingston Blu 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory  ($64.99 @ Newegg)
Storage:  Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive  ($54.98 @ OutletPC)
Video Card:  MSI Radeon R7 260X 2GB Video Card  ($99.99 @ Newegg)
Case:  Cooler Master N200 MicroATX Mid Tower Case  ($39.99 @ Newegg)
Power Supply:  Corsair Builder 430W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply  ($19.99 @ Micro Center)

Crossfiring an APU with one of the approved GPUs is still kind of a mess. Until stuff like HSA becomes more commonplace, there's not much reason to go for an APU.
