Good enough drive?

My drive died and i need to buy a new one

i had a 250gb hhd and it was enough storage for me

i found a wd 250gig hhd on amzon for 40$ cad

i heard that WD is better than Seagate/more reliable

i dont really want to get a 500gb or a 1tb since thse are more expensive an because 250gb was enough

and i dont want to get a higher capacaty drive since they are more expenive and for me ussless in my case

if there are any other drive better/cheaper i am open for other recomandation

You can get a 240gb SSD for $30 cad. It's much better than a spinning hdd, trust me.

"Longer lifespan" isn't always true, either SSDs or HDDs could die at any time.

An SSD is probably better for you at that price. No one should pay 40 cad for a 250gb drive... that's what I paid for a brand new 1tb drive.

HDD"s are dead except for mass storage.  You should be going with SSD's for Windows and apps, and when you can... games and even mass storage.

 

Or if you still have a fax machine and a VCR, get another HDD

There is a fixed minimum cost of producing any HDD, e.g. casing, spindle/motor, controller board. The only variable cost is size/number/density of the platters. We're at the point where any drive under ~2TB is essentially the same cost as they're either old stock, have only one platter, or are binned larger drives with bad/missing platters.

 

FWIW, larger HDDs tend to have higher continuous performance numbers because (higher density)*(rotation rate) = (more bits per second).

And honestly, the "best for storing extra data" only works on a price/GB basis.  A HDD is not physically better for storing files, just cheaper.

Most HDD's die after about 3-4 years from what I can find on the internet, but I've never had one die in less than 10 years so I don't know if that's true. A decent and modern SSD can last a really long time, probably longer than most HDD's. If this is important for you, consider a sligthly more expensive SSD like the Crucial BX500 240gb ($31.38 cad) or even better ADATA Ultimate SU800 256gb ($39.99 cad). About price, as you can see in this case the SSD is not more expensive.
