Maybe a system restore would work. It seems that the operating system is corrupted in some way, so if you keep pressing F8 as Kemical has just said, it should give you a screen. Booting into safe mode would ensure that the operating system still exists on the computer and technically still works, but if you get the menu, then that is a pretty good indicator that the Windows OS is installed. If you can get into the menu, scroll down to the System Restore option and then restore it to the point in time before this problem was evident. If that doesn't help, maybe going into the motherboards BIOS and Resetting the CMOS should set everything to factory settings, which means that if the motherboard had something corrupted with it internally (in terms of firmware), it would be fixed (unless it was damaged physically in anyway). However, it sounds to me like the OS is corrupted, and if a System restore doesn't cut it, then reinstalling the OS is probably a good idea.

Hope I was of some help!

keep taping F8 see if you can get into safe mode or if you have an external monitor with a higher resolution conect it cand change from there

Definitely try for safe mode during boot up,

and just because it doesn't show a prompt to hit f8 (or another specific key) to get into safe mode, from there you can try to force a persistent change to the correct res.

extra montor is also a good idea.

if it doesn't automatically start displaying desktop / start screen

and if his laptop boots straight to the start screen he can hit: Windows + P, then up / down then ENTER, this will start using the secondary display to output video.

then get to desktop or control panel and change the res back to safe.
