Overclocking CPU questions

Go to solution Solved by minimoose,

It depends, but for 4.2 to get it really dialed in it should only take 20min max. Then stress test for a little while.

Cool!  About 10 hours of stress testing?

First off, this is my first time overclocking a CPU.  Next I have a 3570K and a ASUS P8Z77-V LX.

I am thinking about buying a cooler master hyper 212 evo, I currently have the stock cooler, and I was wondering if I could hit 4.0ghz without high temps or a loud fan with the new cooler.  Also would I need to raise the voltage to hit that clock?  I know all CPUs OC differently, but is it insane to think I won't have to over volt?

Also since I have a ASUS mobo, is AI suite any good for auto overclocks?  I know I won't get the max possible OC with it, but does it work well?

So auto overclocking would be much better then?  Also how is 4.0ghz low :P

It wouldn't really be auto since it could, in almost 100% likely hood, get to 4 without changing the voltage.

lol I mean low since it's so close to the stock speeds. You could easily get into the 4.4GHz+ range depending on your chip with that cooler.

Well, how high would the auto take me?

I think it depends on how good your chip is, there's only one way to find out lol

You should OC it yourself since the auto will give it more voltage than it needs.

But approximately? Like 4.2 ish? Also manual overclocking seems like it takes forever and takes you computer out of commission for a few days. Notwithstanding the fact I don't trust myself to do it.

Try 4.2 and see what happens without changing anything else.

You really can't mess up, trust me.

4 ghz is quite low. 4.2 ghz is the lowest clock I'd actually consider as 'an oc' for a 3570k.

Manual is pretty much always better since auto adds excess voltage which would lower the lifespan and raise the heat of the cpu.

Regarding the original question: The 212 Evo is plenty for that. You should probably shoot for +4.2ghz though.

I don't have the cooler yet. So my cpu can't do it. Is it better to use the BIOS or a program? What is the best program?

It's best to do it through the bios if possible.

No I said I am thinking about getting it. Is there a guide to where everything is on asus p8 z77 v l series motherboard in the bios?

Oh ok, the 212 is perfect for what you want.

Just spam delete at startup, it should tell you on the splash screen though.

I know how to get into my BIOS jeez... But I don't know where the multiplier or ratio, or voltages are (words I have heard thrown around.

I read that completely wrong lol sorry.

It should be in frequency options, I haven't used that board so I don't know. The best way would just be to look for it, it should be right there in the BIOS.

I found it in the manual. Thanks for all your help! One last question is of I want to turn off turbo? Actually one more thing :). If I end up over volting what increments do I want to go up by? My cpu is at like 0.93 and I know not to go higher than 1.3, so like half a volt at a time?

No problem!

eh, I leave it on, I don't think it can do any harm.

So lets say you set the clock speed to 4.2 and it was unstable at 1.15V, (idk what stock is :/) I would bump it up to 1.2V and see if it's stable. If it is I would either go up more and see how far I can get at that voltage or I would scale back the voltage to: 1.18 etc until it's unstable and use it at the lowest voltage possible for that frequency. If that's unclear tell me lol

Yeah, I got that from Linus' guide.  Is it ok to jump straight to 4.2ghz?

Yep, it will most likely be stable at stock voltage.

If you want some help during the time you're OCing just make a thread!
