Random no video on boot?

My 5900X build has run quite well for the most part -- save for one very annoying issue that comes and goes. It randomly boots without video. At first I thought this was Windows freezing before it even started loading, but on one such incident, disconnecting and reconnecting the cable that the machine was in fact booting into Windows without displaying video. Reseating GPU / RAM / cable connections, revised cable management, a support wire to eliminate GPU sag, and ensuring the cable was connected to the primary HDMI port have all failed to remedy the problem, as it happened again this morning. I'm at a loss.

 

The only thought I have now is, can a PCIe3 M.2 interfere with GPU video on boot? I'm hypothesizing the WD Blue SN570 M.2 I have, being a PCIe3, may be shutting out the GPU on occasion when booting. I've also seen a few threads indicating USB devices can cause this as well, so perhaps the x16 USB riser I have is interfering. It isn't essential, merely installed to prevent wear and damage from lateral stress to the system board's USB ports. However, simply removing the card caused Windows to freeze while loading. I tried for several hours to find the correct device to disable in Device Manager, with no luck.

 

This has gone way beyond irritating at this point. I backed up all my data to the auxiliary hard drive, and I think my next attempt will be a fresh Windows install without the USB riser. If that doesn't cure it, I may have to explore a non-M.2 SSD, but I'm kind of at wits' end ready to just get rid of it and start another build.

 

Does anyone else have any other thoughts on this? I have noticed that even though I have Asus Aura set to dark on the mobo through Armoury Crate, it uses a rainbow effect when not running, and I don't think it should be doing anything at all when not running. Is it possible the system is going to sleep rather than shutting down when instructed?

I've had strange issues like this before with my 980ti where it wouldn't display to DP until after POSTing and showing the BIOS splash screen. But it would always regain output after this. I think ultimately it was my Corsair K70 RGB which has 2 USB 2.0 ports and when connected to anything USB 2.0+ it would cause the output redirect. 

 

I suggest going into the BIOS and looking for a display PCIE option. I have it set to only display from PCIE slot 1 where my GPU is and prevents issues that might assign the output to another PCIE slot or onboard graphics. I would also run DDU and fresh install your drivers.

I don't seem to have an option for that or for something else that I was suggested.

 

I'm not the only one having this problem, but it sort of puts me in a quandary. Reason being, I've read threads indicating the common denominator is either the board or too many USB hubs / ports / devices, as well as a PCIe conflict (possible gridlock between USB riser and GPU, as USB riser is x8 in x16 slot, exacerbated by the M.2). Any of them would make sense to me. But is it a question of two of the three, or only one?

 

Unfortunately, the board isn't really a solution, as it is one of only three boards on the market (all made by ASUS) that can handle the heat of the 5900X. And it seems to me this would be more frequent and problematic than it is, were it an issue with the board. Even if I thought a BIOS update would fix it, ASUS' website isn't really straightforward about accessing / downloading any firmware / BIOS updates.

 

The USB riser isn't really a deal-breaker, as it was only installed to prevent damage / wear to the mainboard's USB ports. And I guess the M.2 really isn't, either. But as pondered earlier, do both of them have to go, or only one?

 

I'm really starting to think that the M.2 SSD was designed especially for boot drive options where space is at a premium, say, with an iGPU / mini-ITX build with neither space for a dedicated GPU or a traditional SSD / HDD. I could certainly see where an M.2 might conflict with other PCIe devices, even if some say an M.2 doesn't have the opportunity. Tapped into SATA bandwidth or not, it still uses PCIe lanes.

I was thinking of reinstalling Windows with the USB riser card removed, keeping the M.2, but it really is starting to sound like the M.2 is the problem, and I should remove it and and install Windows to a 2.5" SATA. Maybe I would still have to remove the USB riser as well. Or since I have two M.2 slots, perhaps I could fix this problem by simply moving the M.2 to the lower slot, as the article indicates only the slot closer to the CPU would create a conflict. I plan to try that this evening. Thoughts?

Well, well, well... What happened tonight, and my understandable response after about four months of random failures, reseating this, reseating that.... Rig's position behind my display made it tricky to see this light until now.

 

Running MemTest86. Both sticks passed with no errors. Is it possible that the two together could create an error? And why would this even be so intermittent on boot?

UPDATE: Mfr site indicates support for 32 GB of the RAM I have at 2666 Mhz, but not 3200 Mhz. So after both sticks passed testing when sequestered, I disabled DOCP and so far I have twelve straight successful starts / restarts / shutdowns with video.

Another update: Spoke too soon... It's starting to appear I have a motherboard issue, because the system runs fine other than the aforementioned and what you see here.
